Help with Biblio
Short answers to the questions people ask most, written for the current version. If yours is not here, write.
Write to
Say which iPhone or iPad and which version of iOS you use, and the app’s version (Settings, then About, then Version). For a mistake in a text, use Report in the app as described below, so the message carries the module, the verse and the text as you see it.
How do I write a note on a verse?
In the Read tab, tap the verse number to select the verse; tap more verse numbers to add the verses after it. In the bar that appears under the text, tap Note.
The note editor has the passage, a title, the note itself in Markdown with a formatting bar (bold, italic, heading, lists, quote and verse link) and tags. Preview shows the note as it will read. It saves as you type; close it with the close button.
A note that is not about one passage, such as a topic study, starts from New Note in the Journal tab with the passage left empty. Verses with a note show a note symbol in the margin; tap it to open the note.
How do I highlight a verse or a few words?
Tap the verse number to select the verse, then tap a color in the bar under the text. To color only some words, touch and hold a word, drag the handles over the words you want, then choose Highlight in the menu and a color.
A highlight on whole verses shows in every Bible; a highlight on a few words shows in the Bible you made it in. To remove a highlight, select the verse and tap Remove. The colors can be renamed, changed, reordered and added to in the Journal tab under Highlight Colors.
Where do I find my notes and highlights again?
The Journal tab gathers your notes, highlights, bookmarks, tags and reading history. Its search field looks through all of them: type words, or a reference such as John 3 or Rom 8:28 to find everything on that passage.
Notes can be filtered by kind and sorted by last edit, creation, Bible order or title; highlights are grouped by color or by book. While you read, the Notes tab of the study pane lists the notes on the current verse.
How do I download more Bibles and commentaries?
Open the Library tab. A module that is not on your device is marked Not Downloaded; tap the download button beside it, or open it and tap Download. Downloads are free and come from Apple’s servers, so they need an internet connection. Once downloaded, a module works offline like the built-in ones. The filter menu can show only what is on the device or only what is not downloaded yet.
To read a different Bible, tap the Bible’s abbreviation next to the chapter name in the Read tab. To change which Bible, commentary or dictionary opens by default, use Default Modules at the top of the Library. To remove a download, open the module and tap Delete Download.
Which translations are included, and why is mine missing?
Built in: the King James Version, the Berean Standard Bible, the World English Bible, the Hebrew Westminster Leningrad Codex and the SBL Greek New Testament. Free downloads add twenty more, among them the American Standard Version, Young’s Literal Translation, the 1599 Geneva Bible, Darby, Webster, two more Greek New Testaments, and Bibles in Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. The Library lists every one with its license and source.
Only public-domain texts and texts whose publishers license them openly (CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA) are included. Modern translations that need a publisher’s permission, such as the NIV, ESV, NASB or NKJV, are therefore not available.
Do my notes sync between my iPhone and iPad?
Yes, when both devices are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account. Notes, highlights, bookmarks, tags, reading history, memory verses, prayers and reading plan progress sync through your private iCloud database, and your settings sync through iCloud as well, except a few that belong to one device (the read-aloud voice, keeping the screen awake and the width of the iPad study pane). There is nothing to turn on.
Journal, then Backup and Restore, shows whether the journal is syncing with iCloud or kept on this device only. If you sign in to iCloud after opening the app, quit and reopen it to start syncing; nothing on the device is lost.
How do I back up and restore my notes?
In the Journal tab, open Backup and Restore and tap Export Backup. It saves one file with your notes, highlights and colors, bookmarks, tags, reading history, memory verses, prayers and reading plan progress; keep it in Files or iCloud Drive.
Import Backup merges a backup into the journal. Nothing is deleted, and when both have the same item the newer edit is kept, so an old backup never overwrites newer work. Export Notes as Markdown writes a folder with one Markdown file per note, readable in any notes app.
Can it read the Bible aloud?
Select a verse and tap Read Aloud in the bar; reading starts at that verse and goes on through the book. A player at the bottom of the screen has the previous and next verse, pause, the speed (0.75× to 2×), a sleep timer (5 to 90 minutes, or the end of the chapter) and stop. Reading goes on with the screen locked, with controls on the Lock Screen.
The app speaks with the voices on your device and never sends the text anywhere. Choose a voice in Settings, under Read Aloud. Better voices, including Enhanced and Premium ones, can be downloaded in the iPhone or iPad Settings app under Accessibility, Spoken Content, Voices.
I found a mistake in a text. How do I report it?
Select the verse or verses, tap Report in the bar (or Report a Problem under More, when the bar has no room for it) and choose Email to Support. Your email app opens a message to support@biblebe.lt with the module, its version, the reference, the text as it is shown and the app version, followed by the line “What is wrong:”. Say below that line what should be different, and where you checked it if you can (a printed edition, for example). Nothing is sent until you send it.
Share Report puts the same message in the share sheet instead, to send another way. If no email app on the device opens the message, the app shows the address to copy and offers Share Report.
What works without an internet connection?
Reading, the word studies, the study pane, search, the Journal, memory verses, the Today tab and read aloud all work offline with the built-in and downloaded modules. A connection is needed only to download modules, to sync through iCloud and to load the map. Web links open in Safari.
How do I change the text size, font or theme?
The text-size button in the Read tab’s toolbar opens Reading Options: one Bible, parallel Bibles or the interlinear, the text layout and the size. Settings (the gear button) has the six themes and a System choice that follows the device’s light and dark mode, the reading font, including Atkinson Hyperlegible and OpenDyslexic, the line spacing, verse numbers, the words of Jesus in red, and more. The app also follows the text size set for the whole device.
Can I import my own modules?
Yes. In the Library tab, tap Import a Module and choose the file. The app reads Bible, commentary, dictionary, lexicon, topic and devotional modules in two widely shared SQLite formats, with file names ending in .bbli, .cmti, .dcti, .lexi, .topi, .devi, .bbl.mybible, .cmt.mybible or .dct.mybible, as well as its own .sqlite modules. Older formats that store their text as RTF (names ending in .bblx, .cmtx, .dctx and similar) and encrypted modules cannot be imported; the app says why when it refuses a file. Imported modules stay on the device where you imported them.
How do I delete my data?
Settings, then Reset, then Delete All My Data removes your highlights and highlight colors, notes, bookmarks, tags, reading history, memory verses, prayers, and reading plan and devotional progress, from this device and, when iCloud sync is on, from iCloud and your other devices. It also clears your recent searches and removes your prayer and reading plan reminders. It cannot be undone, so export a backup first if you may want them back. Reset All Settings restores the settings and leaves your data alone, and modules you imported or downloaded are deleted in the Library. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on the device, but not your data and settings in iCloud; to remove them too, use Delete All My Data and Reset All Settings before you delete the app.
